![]() But the best part is that it’s based on truth. It’s a detail my publisher loved when I first told them about the book. In the book, it’s revealed that while Hazel’s dad was hosting his TV show, he was also secretly doing work for the U.S. Indeed, for Hazel, the greatest mystery is herself. So only by solving the murder can Hazel learn the truth about her father-and who she really is. Then a man from the FBI shows up, asking questions about her dad-and about his connection to the corpse of a man found with an object stuffed into his chest: a priceless book that belonged to Benedict Arnold.Īs Hazel tries to piece together clues from her past-guns she doesn’t remember owning, scars she can’t recall-the less she likes the person she seems to have been. She’s told she’s been in a car accident that killed her father and injured her brother, but she can’t remember any of it, because of her own traumatic brain injury. Years later, Hazel wakes up in the hospital and remembers nothing, not even her own name. ![]() So even as a child, Hazel loved hearing her dad’s tall tales, especially the one about a leather book belonging to Benedict Arnold that was hidden in a corpse. Hazel’s father is Jack Nash, the host of America’s favorite conspiracy TV show, The House of Secrets. I knew her from the very first page and that opening scene: I kept picturing this little six year old girl, sitting on her dad’s lap, listening as her father told stories. Plus, in today’s world, we need real heroes. As someone who writes thrillers, it was the perfect setting for a mystery. Dover is a place full of mysteries…and surprises…and more secrets than you can imagine. In addition, the people there know details about hidden missions that almost no one in the world will ever hear about. In their building, as you see in the book, they make sure our most honorable soldiers are shown the dignity and respect they deserve. In Delaware of all places, at Dover Air Force Base, is America’s most important funeral home. So were the victims of the attack on the USS Cole, the astronauts from the space shuttle Columbia, and the remains of well over fifty thousand soldiers and CIA operatives who fought in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and every secret location in between. On 9/11, the victims of the Pentagon attack were brought there. The Dover scenes in the book are all based in reality: Dover is home of the mortuary for the US government’s most top-secret and high-profile cases. Dover Air Force Base is a place I never thought the government would let me into. Years ago, I went to the Middle East with the USO, then a few months back, I took another trip to entertain our troops. Just be concise and clear, and send out the best book you can. What does that mean? Don’t be a nudge (I know, because I was-and none of those agents wrote me back). Also, there’s a fine line between enthusiasm and desperation. And the sad truth is, agents want what they can’t have, and whatever they can have, they don’t want. (Don’t say, “In Chapter One, this happens then in Chapter Two, this happens then in Chapter Three…). As someone once told me, write it like you’re writing the inside flap copy for the book. Most, if not all, writers thank their agents-and that’s one way to get a list of agents who have actually sold things.īeyond that, write a short (short!) cover letter to send out to prospective agents. As a trick (which I recommend), you should pick out a few authors you like and check the Acknowledgements section of their hardback books. After that, you can find a list of agents in books like The Guide to Literary Agents.
